Tattoo Artist or Inky Mess Maker

By: Norbert Yip

There are a great number of poor artists out there plying the trade. As with any profession where integrity and standards are not regulated, there is a slim chance that the person you work with may not be the most skilled at creating an image that you will find acceptable. Not to impugn the many credible and accomplished individuals out there who bring life to the skin of their satisfied clients, but I would like to point out that not all are cut from the same cloth.

There may be any number of reasons an artist may choose the medium rather than working in some other format like oil paint or sculpture. Perhaps the educational opportunities weren't available. Maybe they didn't have the skill set or stick to it that other fine arts careers required. Like choosing a physician there are a number of considerations: availability (does the artist work nearby?), reliability (did they keep your appointment today or were they otherwise detained at a previous appointment or forgot the way to the shop?), affordability (do they charge more than you are willing to pay or charge for their work in some unavailable commodity like peacock feathers?), personality (do they remind you of your hated ninth grade math teacher or too much of an uncle you can’t stand the sight of) and talent (if they really know their craft or did they learn it watching tv?)

I can’t speak for other consumers of popular culture when I say that I like what I like. I really have to see it to believe it. A mere line drawing on a piece of paper doesn't clearly enough allow me to envision what a piece will look like until it has at least been transferred to the skin and is ready to be judged upon its own artistic merit on the arm.

The only real way, and even this is not guaranteed since any artist can have an off day, to tell whether you've got the right person is to check the portfolio. Nobody in the business for long doesn't have a big collection of pictures of their work so you’ll be able to tell quick smart if you’ve got the right one for you.
