Tattoo Galleries: Eye Candy or Design Graveyards

By: Yazmin Abienats

When looking for great new designs for ink, one can really get lost in the myriad sites, books and shop displays available to the modern flash consumer. When I was thinking of getting my latest work - a picture of a drunken cheetah riding a three-legged mountain lion - I decided to first take my search online, to the wild and wooly world of the Interweb. I knew instinctively after years of perusing websites and other online media that the best way to start would be to fire up my trusty dusty computer, insert the networking cable, fire up my cable modem and launch an Internet browser like Explorer or perhaps even Chrome or Firefox.

Firstly, and now online, I had to find a gallery of artwork to peruse. I searched using Google Search for the term that is comprised of the first two words of this article and clicked the first result. I was treated to an unholy cornucopia of flash but very little of it was suited to my particular or may I say peculiar tastes. There were a few cheetahs but very few of them appeared to be imbibing today. Maybe if one wanted an authentic picture of such an animal that had had a few or was in its cups as they say, the only reasonable course of action would be to procure a large bottle of hooch (may I suggest a delicious, fruity Chianti or Zinfandel) and a dog dish, head down to the local zoo and sneak up to the cage while nobody is looking, dog dish full of booze and a camera in hand. Once the beast is sufficiently happy, the second part of the mission would be to find a three legged mountain goat.

While it may seem to your mind at least that this would be the most naturally available commodity in a large modern zoological facility, my experience tells me otherwise. I did have on hand the inebriated cheetah but how to remove a leg from one of the mountain goats was presenting a very difficult issue indeed. I set out, nail clippers in hand to bag me one of the little devils but after several hours trying to get into the cage (the darned thing was locked would you believe) I gave up and finished the rest of the wine myself before going home to render my design in crayon on a napkin before presenting it proudly to my local artist for indelible etching upon my sorry carcass.
