A total commitment to looking great is what’s important. What you want is the finest design for your personality and needs. But, how to summarize what you are all about or are trying to say in a single arm piece or by decorating your back? One supposes that your reasons for getting your work done are along the lines of commemorating a place in your life, a special person, event or feeling you once had. What makes a life event worth commemorating in ink? Milestones in life can be the birth of a child, moving to a new city, getting a new job, finding a new partner, releasing your first novel or record, going on the road with your metal band or any number of other possibilities.

What if you want to have ink to remind you of someone you love or have a special connection to? I'm thinking that you may not want to do this flippantly, working only on a passing fancy. Getting work to remind you of this week's favourite pop star might not be a prudent idea. Think about how silly Christina Aguilera on your arm would look in ten years. I mean, she’s super great now but what about when she gets all old and outdated. It would be like having the lead singer of Prism on your arm now. Too bad.

Better to stick to what will never go away like a child or a partner. A partner might go away but at least while they are around, they will feel deeply honoured that you chose to write their name or have their image boldly emblazoned on your body. Afterwards, you could always have their name inked over with a delightful black box or made into an unrecognizable part of a floral or jungle scene. Come to think of it, best to rely on someone who will never go away like your kid. As long as you love each other and you can find a way to support them, then you’re set and your piece will never get old. As you age gracefully and gaze at yourself in the bathroom mirror in the old age home, you will always have the comfort of knowing that you got your kid's name or face marked on your body in a more or less permanent manner.

Finding a person, event or milestone important enough to want to do a commemorative piece will make you want to find the most fitting tribute. One that will last forever or at least as long as you do.
