Tattoo Aftercare for Hepsters

By: Hughey Oppenheimer

So you got that wikked new tatty. Good for you. Now what? Well, there are a number of things you can do to look after your new piece, heal faster and look better quicker. Steps to follow include washing, bandaging, keeping out of direct sunlight and applying A & D ointment.

Gently wash the area with antibacterial soap using your hands rather than a washcloth three times daily or more often if you are exposed to dirt or excessive sweat. Keeping the area clean is important to help prevent infection. Once you've washed, then you need to carefully dry by patting the area rather than rubbing with a cloth.

Apply A&D ointment and cover loosely with a bandage. Other people have told me that Shea butter works pretty good too. The ointment may help to keep the area from sticking to your bandage. If the bandages do stick, then you can loosen them with cool, fresh water.

You can keep all this stuff up for up to ten weeks all the while avoiding the urge to scratch or using Vaseline or hydrogen peroxide. If anything looks like it's getting infected be sure to consult a medic as soon as possible. You don't want to take any chances. You should also avoid swimming for a few weeks and steam rooms.
