So you've decided to ditch the tattoo transfers you found at the dollar store, take the plunge and get the awesome piece of body art you’ve been wanting for so very long? There are a number of issues to consider when opting to get a new tattoo.

First off, you need an idea of what you’d like to get. I mean, you need to really be sure it’s something you can bear to live with for the rest of your life. Often people will get a piece to commemorate someone special in their life, remember a trip they took, or to try to be more attractive to members of the opposite sex.

If your reason is to show your love and commitment to a special person in your life, there may be a way that you can represent them graphically. Perhaps you can take a photo of your loved one to a tattoo artist and ask them to render a lifelike image in ink. Alternately you could use an object or collection of objects that are symbolic of your loved one. For instance, if your brother was a gambling man, then you could maybe write his name down and find a number of gambling-related symbols. Like, "Randy" surrounded by dice and poker chips or a roulette wheel. Nothing like some good graphic art to really put you in the mind of someone you love.

If you want to have a tattoo to help you to remember a trip you took, you also have a number of options. As with the commemorative tattoo, perhaps the place you’re looking to remember can be rendered symbolically. For instance, if you wanted to remember your last trip to jail, you could put the name of the prison at the bottom with your favourite prison meal pictured above: it would be like a living restaurant menu of honoured commemoration.

If your aim is to use your tattoo to attract members of the opposite sex, a popular strategy is to hang around in bars to see what the really popular people have for tattoos and come up with a design that emulates their flash. Although your tattoo will be a statement of your own original personality, it couldn’t hurt to see what kind of designs are being worn by the more popular hunks or babes there at the bar. You might find out that, for men, the most sexually appealing tattoo is to have a snake wrapped around a retro-styled naked woman. The intimation is of course that you have all the masculine prowess of a reptile that is interested in women. For the classy lady, perhaps a lower back piece that says "sure, a drink would probably work" or something like that. There is no better way to say I’m ready than to say, yes to every drink one is offered.
